Reading for Pleasure

Reading Champions

Our Reading Champions are nominated from each class in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. This group of passionate readers work closely with our school librarian to promote the love and value of reading. The Reading Champions make book and author recommendations; plan events and ensure our school libraries are well stocked and welcoming.

Halsnead School Library

Our school library is the hub of our reading for pleasure ethos. Thoughtfully designed and cared for by our adopted school librarian and her team of reading champions, the library continues to evolve and develop. Pupils' voice, ideas and suggestions for books, activities and decor mean it is a library that is being crafted 'for our children and by our children'.

Reading Events

To promote a love of reading, we plan a calendar of celebration events.  These include author events, World Book Day, Reading Cafés, Reading Buddies sessions to name but a few.

Golden Coin Winners and the Book Vending Machine

Over the course of each half-term, teachers choose children who have demonstrated a positive attitude to reading – this may be consistent home reading, making book recommendations, concentrated reading during reading for pleasure time, showing interest and/or making insightful reflections on personal or whole class reading etc. These role model readers receive a Golden Coin which they may use to choose a book from our book vending machine!
